Author's Review
Vietcong is a well thought out First Person Shooter. The graphics are pretty good in this game & demand a good quality video card to run it properly. I recommend something like an ATI 9000 or better. The style of graphics, which is mostly Jungle oriented, gives the user the feeling of being immersed in the World of the Vietcong. Immersion in gameplay is very important, without it its hard to get into the game.
The second quality feature is the sound effects. Turn on the Hardware 3D surround & you are in the jungle. Its great. This is one feature of Vietcong that really rocks. Again if you haven't got the Hardware you will miss out. I have a Hercules Fortissimo 7.1 & this takes full advantage of the totall immersion effect of Vietcongs sound. I rate this aspect of the game as topclass.
The third point of quality in this game is the imaginative storyline. The script writers have kept it varied. You will enjoy the way the game switches from solo missions to team missions. You might find yourself crawling through tunnels one minute & then wading through a swamp the next.
There are plenty of meaty weapons, but you can only hold 3 at once. This means you must discard a weapon in order to pick up a better one this can be a nuisance at times. But the weapons all do the job adequately.
I found this game challenging ( sometimes too much )but engageing. It will keep you going back for more. Its no Medal of Honour but I would put it on a par with Soldier of Fortune 2.
On the downside the constant bad language can get a bit depressing unless you like that sort of thing. I wouldn't let my 11 year old son play it.
Finally a word on Hardware. I reckon this game will struggle on a lower spec machine. Anything less than a Geforce 4 & a 1.4 Athlon. I haven't tested it, but on my 2 Gig Athlon & ATI 8500 ( 512MB Ram )it just about copes.
I would recommend Vietcong to anyone who loves FPS Wargames.
