Epinions

Could be called a counter-strike clone only its single player

by  Atreides93,   May 12, 2003

Pros:  FPS with an entertaining single player storyline.

Cons:  Requires advanced 3D card to play.

The Bottom Line:  Definitely worth playing. You might need a faster machine though, but you can get by with a GForce2GTS PRO.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

UPDATE:
I just found out the reason this game is so slow on my system isn't because my GForce2 card is too weak. The game has a "bug" where it constantly scans the cd-rom disk. This causes it to slow down even on a fast system. This copy protection method really hurts the game performance. They did release a patch though and since installing the patch I noticed a big increase in frames per second. The only thing is I already upgraded my video card, so now I am not sure if my old GForce2 card was good enough or not.

I really enjoy this game. I haven't noticed any sound or graphic bugs as others have pointed out. I've played it for about 20 hours so far and haven't seen anything out of the ordinary. It did crash to the desktop once, but that's nothing after running it for so many hours without a mishap.

The storyline is pretty interesting, you find yourself fighting in the vietnam war as a special ops guy. You lead a squad on various covert missions. You can give orders to your individual team members but you can't assume their identity as you can in games like ghost Recon.
This game doesn't try to be as realistic as Ghost Recon, but it still does a good job. When you fire various machine guns and sub machine guns the recoil affects your fire. typical counter-strike tricks like squeezing off a few rounds at a time instead of just constantly firing yields much better results.

One thing I found out recently is there are two versions to this game. One version sold in the US and the other is sold in the UK and europe. The european version is more mature and includes racial slangs and profanity. I think anyone who has watched a vietnam war movie knows there is plenty of profanity and racial slurs used by the troops. Unfortunately in the US version which is what I have, they cut all that out.
I am not happy about that...i think it adds to the realism to hear how the people talked back then...yea the racist slurs might annoy someone, but that's the way it was!??
It seems to me the vietnam war was anything but politically correct.

Another thing I didnt like was on some missions you just follow the point man and it gets a bit tedious/boring

As for the hardware requirements. For smooth 3D gameplay you need to be able to get at least 30fps or so. In this game, I was only getting 23fps or 25fps, and if I turn on antialiasing I only get 15fps. I have an Athlon 2100XP and a GForce2 GTS Pro graphics card. Obviously this game needs more than that. I believe one of the newer GForce4 cards would be great for this game.
