Author's Review
Vietcong is yet another of those Vietnam remakes that I dread so much. However, that aside, it deserves a fair and impartial review. Quite honestly, this game is definitely cool. The Ptero-Engine II which is developed by one of the makers (alongside G.O.D.) is a very well done engine and truly does the job. I quickly jumped into the multiplayer, because thats what I love, and I was in awe once joining the first server. The feeling is surreal. It was dark, quite (with animal sounds and bush sounds), and was so hard to see the opponents. To tell you the truth, if this was real war, I would have been tried for 36 war crimes, I just ended up shooting my teammates most of the time.
Later, when I hit the tutorials, it was so life like, where the dumb sergeant makes retarded comments and just humiliates and insults you and your 2 mates during the training. Then, you enter the campaign (the tutorial is optional by the way) and are treated to a whole lot of cool cut scenes. The game has a storyline the closely follows what would happen in reality and doesnt just throw you into high impact battles. You eventually get into your missions and you quickly realize the Vietcong enemies arent going to be easy to take out. They are stealthy, so hard to find, and booby trap everywhere. So, the superior realism can be a tad annoying at times, but if you want a real experience, this game does it well compared to every other Vietnam FPS game Ive personally ever played (including Line of Sight which I just reviewed a few weeks ago).
The sound of the game is very good, you can hear the sound out of every channel and that is done well as compared to other games. Its not a simple game where you run and gun, but the gameplay is tweaked and eventually favors you when you learn to play the way you were supposed to. So, overall I have to give this a B+ just because its still a Vietnam game, not that creative of an idea.
