TOM TOM ONE XL-S

I purchased the ONE XL-S (spoken directions)from www.megagps.com (great site, good choices, good prices, quick shipment) and it is a great unit. In fact everything about it is great. Touch screen is great and easy to use my wife (non-techie to the max)was using it within a 1/2 hour of seeing it for the first time. The verbal prompts are very helpful for keeping you focused if you are in a city area where the turns come up quickly. The features are excellent. Point of Interests (restaurants, gas stations, etc) are configurable which is a great feature you can have as many or as few as you want turned on so it doesn't clutter your screen. You can link it with bluetooth phones for making emergency calls. Technically this is an incredibly sound unit and highly recommended.

My only complaint with the system is actually with the maps. At least in the area where I live they appear to be about 3 yrs out of date. Several roads (state and county) are missing. I expect this with private roads (subdivisions etc.) but many of these roads should be on there by now. It has a report missing streets feature but you just put them in and upload them to some nebulous point in the sky. No information is provided on when/if they'll actually update the map. I figured that this was just the map that shipped with the unit and the new updated map was on the website. However, once connected it said I had the most recent maps available. It makes me wonder how often these will be updated.

UPDATE:
Just took a trip with the TTone and it did a wonderful job overall. However, there are a few points to note. One if you are in a city and using voice prompts sometime it can be a little confusing. In particular if there are several streets close together and you are being instructed to turn. Be sure to watch the yardage countdown and turn only when you have reached 0 or 5/10 yards. Othwerwise, you may turn a street early. You will note that you have made a wrong turn by it recalculating the route.

Several places we have tried to plan a route too have told us that there are no house numbers available on that route.

It has an option to show when you exceed a maximum speed on a road which we turned on. It never has displayed a warning or even showed the max speed for even the largest of highways.

Lastly - be SURE you are on a known street before you tell it to calculate a route. If for example you are in a parking lot or private street that it doesn't recognize..it appears to calculate the route from the city center (that you are located in). Really make for some confusion because as soon as you pull out of the lot it recalculates the directions and may immediately tell you to turn around and/or take an immediate right or left (which you may not be able to do on a 3, 4, or 5 lane road.) If you do miss a turn though it will recalculte the road and then you may end up driving farther than you should have!
