Wow... Eidos' Tomb Raider mus tbe setting some type of record now. Not onlyhas it appeared on Saturn, dreamcast, pc, and playstation; but now on the Color Gameboy. Unfrotunatly, the last few games of the series really didn't change the marketplace at all, untill this one. Amazingly enough this is the most fun I have had with Lara Croft for some time now. Unfortunatly, it does have some minor problems that should be noted....
Graphics: My personal favorite part of this game is the graphics. Since the gameboy cannot do polygons, thq was forced to go back to the sprites. The graphics, in my opinion, get the "Tomb Raider vibe" across really well. Although some could argue that they are a bit cartoony, I think they were the best alternative to the semi-realitic sprites. In fact, the graphics really push the power of the gameboy. The sprites are clean cut, and everything is really bright on defined on the gameboys LCD screen. The coolest thing about the graphics, is when you pull out you guns. Lara will "auto-target" the enemy and foloow it with her guns. It doesn't sound like much on paper (or on a computer screen in this case), but small details like this really make the game. GRADE:A
Control: This is where the game fails in my book. The developers were a bit too ambitious when they tried to tackle the control system. The playstation and dreamcast each have many more buttons than our Gameboy, but the developers tried to deliver all of the moves.... ON TWO BUTTONS! In fact, CORE included 25 moves for Lara to play with. This makes for some interesting control at least. After owning this game for about a week, i still occasionally kill myself because i accidently hit the wrong move. I am sure in another week I'll get it down, but this might turn some gamers away on their first expirience with the game. GRADE:D
OVERALL: C+ -- This game, like all games, has its ups and downs. It does boast incredible graphics, but they are overshadowed by the lack of levels (16 in all) and the shady controls. If you are a patient type of gamer, you might want to try this game out. Don't expect anything like CONTRA out of this game. My best advice is to go to BLOCKBUSTER and rent it first. If you like it buy it, if not, buy Metal gear Solid.
