Great for the Simpsons fanatic!

by  T-Loco,   Jan 15, 2002

Pros:  simple controls, mindless fun

Cons:  voice samples aren't in sync and get repetitive, loading time= too slow for the xbox

The Bottom Line:  This game is great for Simpsons fans because of all the characters and references. Fast, simple fun, but the sound could be better.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Attention all Simpsons fans, this game will tickle your gaming nerves! Although this game is a direct rip off of the Sega Dreamcast game, Crazy Taxi, it still provides plentifull fun. The gameplay is the same. You drive through several areas, pick up pedestrians and take them to their desired destination as fast as you possibly can.

What are the differences? Well, unlike Crazy Taxi, you don't accumulate points if you fly through the air in your automobile or if you come to a near collision with another car. Your income directly relates to the time it takes you to drive your passengers to their destinations and any bonuses you many complete. There are two bonuses that are given to you at random times. One instructs you to avoid running into cars for less than 3 times before reaching your destination. The other task is to destroy a certain number of objects along the road (not including cars) also before reaching your destination.

Unfortunately, Road Rage does not provide exciting rock music like Crazy Taxi did. However, if it did, I think it would take away from the focus of what the characters say.

An added obstacle in the game features Smithers who drives Mr. Burns around in order to prevent you from picking up HIS customers. They will actually be somewhere in the vicinity and intentionally ram into your vehicle, causing you to come to an abrupt stop, impeding progress.

I have found myself becoming a tad addicted to this game. The reason I have found for this is because it's quite easy to open more characters and locations; plus it's a lot of fun. All you need to do is play the Road Rage mode and keep earning money until the desired amount given to you is reached. Once you have reached that amount (which becomes increasingly large as you progress in the game) you can choose if you want to open a new character or location. There are 17 famous Simpsons characters to choose from and 6 locations throughout Springfield to coast through. Each character has their own unique car/vehicle and also comes prepared with personal responses to their customers. Some are even particular to who you pick up. What's even more fun is that the customer's responses also become particular to the area they're in.

But a warning to parents:
You may not want your children to listen to some of the character's responses. For example, Apu tells Krusty that he "doesn't have any dirty magazines, but you can pick them up at his store anytime." Krusty then responds with, "Exnay on the ornography." Also, some characters desire to go to such places as the Burlesque. These and other implications are the only parts of the game that I found that would make it have a rating of Teen; not to mention that you can also run over and hit people and destroy tons of property.

There are 4 modes to choose from for gameplay:
-Road Rage: it includes all of the above mentioned
-Sunday Drive: Drive through the area of your choice to
explore and enjoy (no income is gained here).
-Mission Mode: You're given a task to complete.
-Head to Head: A VS. mode where you get to battle your
friend for customers.

Controls are very simple. Right trigger is for drive, left is for reverse (you can always change it if you want). Easy controls call for easy, fun gameplay.

Complaints:
Some levels, such as the nuclear plant, are too hard to navigate through. Walls are obstructive and take too long to get around.
But my biggest complaint about this game are the speech samples. Characters' voice samples do not stay in sync with the gameplay. Sometimes the lag for the voices to come in are too long. For example; I drop off Krusty at his destination and immediately pick up Apu. I have Apu in the car now, but Krusty is still talking to me and Apu still hasn't told me where he wanted to go (verbally). Sometimes when I pick up a character, he/she hasn't said anything at all yet. That's a big lag, and it happens. I think that if this were corrected, the game might be a bit better off.
