King of the Iron Fist... roar

by  la_te_ra_lus,   Aug 8, 2002

Pros:  Many modes, graphics, tons of moves, a lot of secret characters

Cons:  repetitive music, bad background graphics, stories move to fast and don't make sense.

The Bottom Line:  The game is good to play during free time, but avoid it if you're looking for a long game with an in-depth storyline to captivate you.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

I first played Tekken 3 on a demo disc I got with my playstation. The amount of playable characters and accessible modes were each limited to two so I decided to get the whole game.

The graphics of the characters could be a lot worse, and were much like "Metal Gear Solid". The background graphics were somewhat similar to "Sonic the Hedgehog". In other words, they were really really bad. Thankfully, the cardboard like backgrounds had little or no effect on the game.

Some of the old characters are back from the previous games of the Tekken series, as well as some new ones, many of them secret. All the characters have a towering variety of special moves, unfortunately, almost every single one of them requires your fingers to press eight or nine hundred buttons in a row, hard and fast (They're very hard to remember because of their length, but when they're done correctly most of 'em look really cool).

Tekken 3 features many modes of play (1 or 2 are secret). The main mode is "Arcade", and the object is to use one character to beat every other character. Your reward is an FMV showing your character's ending sequence. The game's other modes include 2 Player, Tekken Ball (a mix of volley ball and martial arts), Tekken Force (Much like the very old "Streets of Rage" for Sega Genesis), Practice (Very helpful), and a few others.

The sound effects are plenty realistic and give a little bit of energy to fight with. The music is on the boring side, its slightly repetitive.

Each character has their own conflict that gives them a reason to win the Iron Fist Championship, but none of them are very clear. They only show a character's story mixed in with all of the rest of them during the starting FMV. As I said, the character's ending sequences are shown after beating arcade mode with that specific character, but they are also unclear, move to fast and lack any caption or voice (except for Julia's). The actual game is quite short but it has many secrets to find.
