All right I got this when I got my PC. Why because I had played the
PS2 version and was impressed. But the PC version was half the price so I decided to get that one.
Now Spidey just like every other comic book super hero has is licensed games that have come out over the years. And like pretty much every super hero game they pretty much sucked, Sinister six comes to my mind. But since the move to 3d activision has been putting out some pretty decent Spidey titles. And Spiderman the movie game is no different.
Story.
The story loosely follows that of the movies. Your Peter Parker the man who got bite my a genetically altered spider and has become spider-man. Of course there are some spidey super villains to fight, and they story has been changed to let you battle villains like the Shocker, and gives you more of a chance to battle Gobby.
Graphics.
The graphics are improved over the old graphics of the
ps1 Spider-man. While even on the PC the graphics are deftnley made for the PS2. This mean none FMV cut scenes have edges to the characters and some choppy movements, but there not that bad. It's nice to see that Activision has used some of the newer generation of consoles and PC's to give us a better looking Spiderman. Unlike the PS1 games you can see the full web look of Spidey's costume. But that's nothing compared to the city scenes.
All the graphics fog that was on the PS1 game is gone. Now you can see the city streets below and all the traffic and people running in and out of buildings. The buildings themselves look almost realistic but still keep a bit of a comic book look that the original Spiderman for the PS1 had
Has far has the animation goes the character are fairly well done, with a solid frame rate and very little slow down. There are problems though when Spidey and other characters get to close to ledges, they sometimes get stuck there for a second and just hang there for a moment before falling. This is a small glitch but it's noticeable.
Sound.
You get a few great tunes from the sound track. Of course the greatest is the fact that Spidey and Gobby are done by Toby McGuire and William Defoe. And like the PS1 games there are plenty of insults and wisecracks coming from Spidey. McGuire does a great job has Spidey pulling off every one of Spidey's line right on target.
Gameplay.
If you have played the PS1 game your right at home here. There are two types of stages. The outside rooftop stages which has Spidey swinging from building to building using his web slinging abilities. Then there are the inside stages which has Spidey chasing down supervillians while battling henchmen.
Spidey has use of his spider powers. Including wall crawling web slinging. Has web slinging goes he can use it to tie up bad guys so he can beat on them. Give him hard gloves to give him greater strength. He can also use a web sip to sipp to a nearby wall or ceiling super fast.
You'll need the web zipp ability especially. Because Activision decided that with Spidey's power, should come more James Bond type spy stuff. There are a lot of stages where Spidey has to avoid enemies or he'll trigger alarms. And use shadowy area's and callings to avoid detection.
So how does Spidey control. Well with all of Spidey's moves I do recommend a game pad. Even my crappy Interact Axis pad is easier to use then the key board. But even using the interact controller the controls in this game are pretty good. Spidey moves around pretty gracefully, and they give you more options on steering his web swinging on the roof tops. He can now speed up and jump to change directions. The only thing I have to complain about is the most useless new feature the game has to offer. During the stages Spidey can collect gold icons that give him new moves. These require combo's of buttons being pushed to perform. But there hard to use and they have to be pushed really fast in order to use. The good news these aren't required to beat the game, there mostly used to show off, but activision could have made it better if they weren't required to be mashed so fast.
Final Recommendation.
If your a fan of the old ps1 games then you will like Spiderman the movie.
