extends ir/night distance, but narrow beam

I bought this light for my Sony F-717, which has night vision and a built-in ir light. The built-in light (which is around the edge of the lens in the F-717) gets me about 15 feed in very dark conditions, and this extra light gets me 30 (or more) feet. It runs off of regular batteries, or you can alternatively attach an FM50 battery (same battery the Sony F-717 camera uses). And, there is an intensity dial, so you don't over-light & wash-out things that are relatively close by.

The light works pretty well (it definitely extended the distance of my night photography), but my biggest complaint is that it seems to only shoot out a "beam" of light, and does not spread it out like the built-in ir light did. Therefore, when you're taking a picture of something in the distance, only the middle of the frame is lighted (if you zoom in on that center area, then the entire zoomed area can be lit, but if you're not zoomed in, only the center of your frame is lit). It would be nice if you could adjust the width of the beam (like a mag-light flashlight) in addition to the intensity adjustment they give you.
