DLPs versus LCD?
For best value, I thought the LCD and DLP proj tvs offered the best price/performance. At the time I bought mine (2 months ago) the price delta between LCD and DLP was about $1K - DLP being higher. One of the key drawbacks of LCD is that the black levels aren't that black (dark grey), and being an owner, I have to agree with this. I believe DLPs offer much better black levels than LCD.
Other than that, I think both DLP and LCD offer excellent, bright output and have an awesome viewing angle, on par with Tubes.
Tubes versus LCD?
Tubes are much thicker (depth) and heavier and don't go to the 50"+ sizes you need in your basement! If the price of an LCD is still $1K lower than DLP, I'd go with the LCD since the black level drawback isn't that big a deal. You'll love the vivid colours and brightness of the Award-winning Sony Grand Wega. The Sony has been rated #1 by many TV reviews that I've seen. Of course, this is before Toshiba launched their DLP.
