Takes Your Photos to the Next Level

by  freewheelb,   Dec 6, 2007

Pros:  Build quality, flash strength, easy to use

Cons:  Weight

The Bottom Line:  Gives you great studio-quality for indoor photos, not as good outdoors but still is an amazing flash unit.

I bought this flash unit because I was the photographer in my sister's wedding. It did an absolutely amazing job and gives your regular indoor shots a great studio look.

I have read for some time now that using a bounce light off the ceiling is much better in photos than a direct flash, and using this unit I was able to discover this first-hand. You have to make sure the flash head is angled just right so the light bounces correctly to your subject. When it hits the subject correctly, it creates the most evenly lit, softest photos you'll ever see.

The real test for this unit came in the way of photographing my dog: a black pug. Photographing black dogs in general is extremely difficult and it has become a big deal whenever anyone can get a real good picture of Bitty (my dog). When I got this unit, I tried the bounce flash on her and got the most accurate true-to-life photos I'd ever seen of her.

The most impressive feature, to me, is hands-down the wireless capability of this unit. Turn it to wireless mode, switch the camera's flash setting to wireless and that's it! I haven't used the wireless in a real shoot situation, only in taking casual photos, but it can create some really interesting effects having the light at whatever side/angle you choose.

You can adjust the flash strength depending on how much is really needed, and you can also focus the flash more or dilute it out. The LCD display on the flash also has a button to illuminate the display when working at night.

The battery life is decent; I got a few hundred photos out of one set of 4-AA batteries. I have bought and would recommend to others to buy rechargeable batteries.
