Canon EOS 40D nice but......

First let me say that I recommend this camera if you are making your first digital SLR purchase , especially if you already have Canon lenses . The price to image quality ratio is in your favor .Also check out the Nikon D200 if you are just starting out .

I already have a Canon 20D and after reading all the glowing reviews on the internet and POP mag I went for the
40D ( body only )thinking I would be getting the upgraded camera of the century .

Here is my review , a comparison of the Canon 40D to the Canon 20D , if you will .

Picture Quality - 40D has less noise but I think they did it through software that reduces sharpness of the entire image .The 20D has slightly more noise but the images are sharper and cleaner .

Capture Speed . - 40D is faster but I never had to shoot flat out , petal to the metal , so I don't need that .

View Screen - 40D has a nice one . I never had a problem with the 20Ds

Photoshopping the image . - Here is where I have a problem .
I shot in RAW mode . I use the Canon software provided with the 40D to convert from RAW to TIFF . I use Adobe Photoshop
to work the image . When I resize to make the image smaller
the new image picsilates the sharp edges like my first primitive digital camera - a 3 meg Nikon 995 .I mostly share my images on newsgroups and seldom print , so this flaw is making the camera images almost worthless .I am trying other software in an attempt to correct this problem .I have tried resizing with the Canon software and get the same results and have not found a solution so far .I feel this problem is a result of the 40Ds post processing internal software amping up the image too much .So when you go to work it , the foot print is messed up . I had none of these problems with the 20D . If you plan to use the 40D to print images , I don't know if you will have this problem . I have not printed with the 40D . For the record , when viewing the original sized images in Raw or even converted to TIFF they look sharp .

Bottom Line - Based on the two cameras I have ,if you have a 20D keep it and save your money . The 40d I bought was not worth the money for my purposes and I may sell it if I don't get the results I want .

If I had to do it over , I would have saved MY money and waited for the (next) next generation of camera technology .
