'Easy Thread' - I don't think so!

by  lismith,   Jan 4, 2008

Pros:  inexpensive, lots of stitches, sews well

Cons:  hard to thread, picky about thread

The Bottom Line:  Good basic machine, with just a couple of quirks.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

I've had this machine for about 3 years. It comes with 2 cams, giving you a lot of stitches to choose from. It has a 4-step buttonhole which is very simple but works well. The dials are all convenient and easy to understand. For the most part I'm happy with it. It has more metal parts than others I've seen and seems to be a quality machine. However, the foot pedal is very much plastic and really cheap.

It sews well, but seems to be a bit picky about threads. I've used some polyester threads that are thinner than regular sewing threw and had horrible tension problems. As far as I can tell, there is no way to adjust the bobbin tension on this machine. It's critical that you use the same weight thread on top and bottom or it just makes a big mess.

Another thing I don't like is seeing "EASY THREAD" printed on the front of the machine, mocking me as I try to manipulate the thread through the tension discs correctly. I've found that the easiest way is just to remove the left panel above the needle so I can get to it better. The light is then blinding me while I try to get the thread through the tension discs, but at least I can get to it that way. I guess by "Easy Thread" they are referring to the printed arrows on the housing pointing out the direction the thread goes, but honestly, "EASY THREAD" it is not!
