Great laptop when regular maintenance is performed.

by  mikeb123,   Apr 2, 2006

Pros:  Fast and stable when regular maintenance is preformed.

Cons:  Overheats.

The Bottom Line:  If you know nothing about disassembling a laptop, DO NOT BUY THIS!

I just recently bought this laptop off of a relative of mine. He said it kept shutting down on him without warning. So me, being a computer repair technician, I decided to buy it hoping that I could fix it. I disassembled the whole unit piece by piece and let me tell you, it isn't easy. I discovered that the heat sink was full of dust and gunk. So I took my air compressor and gave it a good cleansing and I also took apart the CPU and applied some Arctic Silver compound to it (the stuff that Toshiba put on it was cheap and slobbered all over the place, that probably explains the overheating aside from the heat sink being clogged with dust.) Anyways, after I put it all together and fired it up, it ran like a charm and didn't shut down unexpectedly anymore. If you purchase this laptop, I recommend that you have it tooken apart and put some Arctic Silver thermal paste on the CPU to keep it running cool and also, make sure to clean the heat sink about every 3 months or so and you will be a happy camper with this laptop. It's just too bad Toshiba made a really fast and cheap laptop but made the coolling system really hard to get to for cleaning.
