Not the iPod, but ok for an MP3 player

by  wupower,   Aug 26, 2008

Pros:  Size, ipod-like design.

Cons:  Not as easy to use, software problems arise.

The Bottom Line:  If I lost this somewhere, I'd probably get a different model for my next player.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

I switched from an iPod to an MP3 player in order to be able to use subscription music on my portable music device. This product provides a decent value among similar players, it is about the same size and shape of the Nano. I had to cut out some holes in my Nano's silicon skin to use it with this player, since other MP3 holders did not work because of the Samsung's touch screen. The sound quality is very good.

The functionality does not match that of the iPod, however. The touch screen doesn't work that well and is too sensitive. I have to stop running in order to look at the thing and change up the music, which is a hassle.

The biggest beef I have is software problems with the player. Within a month of having it, it started to malfunction - producing a high-pitched beep and stopping the music after I had it on for 20 minutes. It has been doing this spuriously now, and resetting it with a paper clip seems to work just fine. But it also means I have to keep a paper clip with me on the armband at all times, seriously. So annoying. I have re-set the thing, and updated the software multiple times.

Another issue I have is how slowly it takes for music to sync, and updating with Napster subscription software. For awhile, the playlists I was creating in Napster were not getting transferred correctly to the device. Also when the playlists are updated in Napster, they attempt to update my MP3 playlist. While new songs get added, the old ones don't get taken away, so I have to find and manually delete everything I want off. My usual method is just to delete everything, and then re-sync. Unfortunately the last I did this, it took a full 2 days - seriously - for all the music to re-sync itself onto the player. I had my computer on the whole time! The sync process with the USB is absurdly slow.

Overall the device is just ok. It's small and compact, so easy to carry, but the software is buggy and it's not as easy to use as the ipod.
