Differences between the Sega Dreamcast and Xbox!!

by  albmab,   Dec 19, 2003

Pros:  Whoa!! The graphics of the car is beautifully detailed!

Cons:  Need more cars! How about volvos?

The Bottom Line:  I think this game is alot more fun to drive than gran turismo 3, because of its arcade feeling. This game is a Xbox Speciality!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

This review specifically looks at the differences and what upgrades have been made.
I have the metropolis street racing on dreamcast, and the second installment of this game is great! just for those in the know, project gotham racing came out on sega's dreamcast under the name of metropolis street racing. So this game would be part two! Well there are alot of differences, yet the game remains the same. Now there are people who love to read what obvious differences are between the dreamcast and Xbox. Graphics, the cars looks better polished than they did in the dreamcast. In both games you can pick the color of your car. But if you choose the color black, you lose the detail on the dreamcast, and even worse when you play at nite time! The xbox version gives you that detail and plus the frame rate that this game moves is awesome. But the driver in opinion was more animated in the dreamcast, but you get to choose the style of helmet the driver wears in the xbox version. But then again its about the car, not the driver. But for those people who want something that looks cool while driving, will miss the animated driver. Personally the animated driver was pretty cool!
Next was the sound of the engine roars on dreamcast. They were horrible, and if this is the only racing game you have ever played, good for you! But comparing with any other games, you'll feel like the engine roars are coming out of those speakers they use in a hamburger drive-thru! But the xbox version loudly turns on the engine roars.
The music it had on the dreamcast was ok. Alot of it was corny, but was like wanna-be music that was trying to imitate will Will smith's rappin. And Will smith rapping is ok, but it's no LL cool J. The xbox version now has a few big names doing the music, but I was expecting the music that you hear on the charts. But the music I gather was specially made for the game. I don’t mind it all though, because it does come with its own custom soundtrack. (buy the music mixer from microsoft) Although music control is confusing at first, especially if you dont like reading the manual. But tens minutes studying, and you'll have an understanding no time. I have over 210 MP3 songs on the xbox, and MP3's takes up 1/5 the room than by downloading the music straight from the CD. Unfortunately you can listen to only 100 songs at a time. But it does add to realism of the game. I just see it as your disc changer is full. Both versions comes with listening to the radio as well, and that pretty much remains untouched. But I thought that is a great idea of having a radio, it really feels like it's really live.
Now the tracks or backgrounds are alot better, but yet the same. Its hard to describe it cause the backgrounds look the same, but are a lot more detail at times. For example, the dreamcast and the xbox share a certain level, Asakusa challenge. On the xbox, just go to QUICK RACE, EASY, then TOKYO. This level is the same on the dreamcast, but you get a better sense of your surroundings on the xbox. But the xbox version also lets you feel the roads and the bumps better than on dreamcast.
So how is the driving? I think its really superb. Each car has its own sense of identity. Its has the sense of driving a car sim, but more of an arcade feeling. Which adds excitement to driving. Also new in the game is the damage collision, which wasn’t present in the dreamcast version. Although I’m pretty sure that it has no effect on the car, like making it slower. But again adds to the realism of the game.
So in closing, this game has out done itself in its second installment, graphics are great, the sounds FXs better and music selection is where it should be. (This review is based on a two hour 10 minutes play time, and I have received 10 medals and three cars within that time.)
