Epinions

I really like those Pikachus. They're delicious!

by  StarSoldier1,   Sep 18, 2006

Pros:  That rat thing is actually pretty cute.

Cons:  It's the same old game!

The Bottom Line:  If you just started on this whole Pokemon bang wagon then maybe you'll like this one but they should've added more stuff and not just recycle the older games.

The Pikachu is a little yellow cute mouse pocket monster (or Pokemon for short) that is definitely the most popular creature from the two last games (Pokemon Red and Blue). I guess the reason behind the Pikachu's popularity can be blamed on that old cartoon show where it was one of the main characters. Now he gets own special Pokemon game here to help Nintendo get even more money. Sure, it's really the same game for people who all ready have Pokemon Red and Blue but now the popular little yellow rat follows you around this time plus a little bit of colour as been added for the Game Boy Color owners out there as well. Still do you really want to waste your hard earn cash for yet another Pokemon game here?

In the game you play as a kid named Ash and you start the game in a small town and you have been given a special gift from Pokemon expert Professor Oak. He gives you your own pocket monster encased in small pocket sized ball but the Professor's grandson Gary steals away your Pokemon in hopes of out doing you. Before you can beat up his punkass up the Professor decides to gives you a Pikachu instead and then the two of you begin your long adventure to find all these different cute monsters around this huge virtual universe.

Your pocket monsters are not just cute little pets that crap all over the place, these little buggers here can fight. The more they fight, the more experience you can get and maybe they can get a few new moves as well. You can carry up to 6 pocket monsters at once but you can also find other monsters and store them in a Pokemon data base so you can help Oak get some info on these wild creatures. Finding certain pocket monsters is easier said then done though.

Some Pokemon are pretty common and you'll be fighting them a lot in grassy areas but some of these little critters can only be found in oddest places and better hope you have the right Poke Ball to capture it. You also have to worry about how much health is left so it won't break your balls (I hate broken balls).

To unlock these new areas and towns you need to gain new abilities, beating up the right kids with their Pokemon, and by getting special Badges by the fighting Pokemon masters first. If you wish to find them all (about 151 altogether) then you also need to trade between the different versions which made you talk your friend into getting the other version and help Nintendo get even more loot.

Like everything else the graphics are pretty much the same too. A lot of the different creatures here look cool and that Misty chick does fine in that bikini (please be 18) just like before. Sadly, there is usually little to no animation in the battle scenes so getting into these constant animal fights can get dull. The graphics had some good points and the new colour effects on the GBC were cool but overall they are still just average.

The same goes for the music and sound effects here. The different wracks and smacks help add dramatic effect to the fights and the background music usually fits in the situation your in too. Chances are these low budget beeps won't make you want to buy the CD or download the MP3. There are new digital Pika effects for the Pikachu but it's nothing major.

Really the only difference between this game and the two older Red and Blue ones is that it has Pikachu follow you all the time so it feels more like the popular cartoon show. There are a few exclusive Pokemon in each cart, a new Pikachu surfing game, a few new animations and sound effects, and a bit of colour for Gameboy Colour users, but sadly that's pretty much it. All the stages, bosses, and locations are exactly the same as the older Red and Blue carts which really sucks. There is no reason pick this up if you have one of the first two but is no denying that monster collecting game play still is fun. Yellow is a good game for die hard fans of the series or new fans that want to jump in but there is nothing too new here to justify spending more money for the rest of the casual gamers.
