Author's Review

When I first heard about Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team I really wanted it. I have a been a pokemon fan for along time and I have most of the pokemon games. As soon as I got the game I started to play it, and I loved it.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is a little different then most of the other pokemon games. If you like pokemon games you will love this one. It is so fun to play you may spend hours playing the game. Continue reading to find out why it is so much fun it is.

When you first start the game you have to answer question which determine which pokemon you will be on your journey. You may have to start over many times if you are hoping to get your favorite pokemon. After that you have to choose who your partner pokemon is from a condensed list.

Story
The story starts when you wake up in a world inhabited by only pokemon and you find your partner standing right in front of you trying to wake you up. Shortly after you wake up a Butterfree comes and asks you to save her son. This leads you and your patner to form a rescue team so you can save more pokemon in trouble. The main story to the game is finding out why you turned into a pokemon. As you rescue more and more pokemon you start to find out clues to why you turned into a pokemon.

Gameplay
The main point of the game is to rescue pokemon in trouble. In Pokemon Mystery Dungeon you don't catch pokemon you actually recruit them. When you first start your rescue team you get a starter kit which has a Rescue Team Badge which allows the pokemon teleport out of the dungeon after you save them. You also get a Toolbox which you put all the items in that you get in the dungeons and you even will items from pokemon once you save them.

There is a mailbox in front of your rescue team base, that is where you can receive rescue request. You also can receive rescue request from the bulletin board outside the pelipper post office, which is over in the Pokemon Square. Once you take a rescue request from either the mailbox or the bulletin board you go to the dungeon where the pokemon is. An example of a rescue is a Rattatat who needs your help finding his friend Sentret in Thunderwave Cave 3F. This means you need to go to Thunderwave Cave 3rd floor to find the Sentret and once you talk to the Sentret it will thank you and teleport out. Then you will be asked if you want to continue or exit the dungeon now, to complete the rescue you must exit the dungeon. You will teleported in front of the notice board will you will meet the Rattatat and the Sentret, they will thank for the help and give you money and even an item or two. You also get rescue points every time you complete a rescue. You start out with a normal rank the more rescue points you get the higher rank you get. The highest rank I know of is Platinum rank, but I think there is a higher rank.

There are a lot of facilities to visit in the Pokemon Square. The Felicity Bank which is ran by Persian is where you can store your money for safe keeping. If you need a place to store your money you need to stop by Kangaskhan Storage which of course is ran by Kangaskhan. The Kecleon brothers own shops that sell items and buy items from you. Wigglytuff owns the Wigglytuff Club where you can buy friend areas which allow you to recruit more pokemon. If you want to train your pokemon just stop by Makuhitas Dojo. Gulpin owns a Link Shop where you can link certain moves together so you can use both of them at the same time. Pelipper's Post Office is where you will find the bulletin board and where you can go on friend rescues which allow you to go and save a friend in trouble.

When you are ready to go into a dungeon you have to go south from your Rescue Team Base. You can either go into a dungeon to save a pokemon in need or just go in for the fun of it. Once you are able to start recruiting pokemon you will find that you can only bring 3 pokemon in a dungeon at a time, but you will still be able to recruit one more in the dungeon if you already have three on your team. The battles in the dungeoons are on a turn based system., and once your pokemon move a step the enemie pokemon on the floor do the same. The same goes once you attack the enemy, and every time this happens it is called a turn. Just like in all pokemon games pokemon get experience points when they defeat another pokemon. When you use a move you get more experience than when you use a regular attack. In order to use a move you press both L and A buttons together. You can only use items in dungeons and there are still status effects.

Every time you enter a dungeon the layout of the dungeon changes. Dungeons will be affected by weather some times, and sometimes it will hurt your pokemon depending on the weather and the type of the pokemon. One good thing is that you will recover your HP back as you walk around. One annoying thing is the introduction of hunger, as you walk your belly will become empty. You use apples and gummies to refill your belly, but you don't always find these in the dungeons. If this happens and you don't have any in your toolbox you are in trouble. If you have friends or siblings with this game you can enjoy Unknown Dungeon (Tag Mode) in which you can get rare items if you are lucky. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon uses a Dual Slot Feature which lets you go on a friend rescue to the GBA Red Rescue Team version.

Controls
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team is on the DS so of course you can use the touch screen but you can also use the regular controls. I prefer to use the regular controls because they are so much easier to use. You use the B button to run and open the menu(only in dungeons). The A button is used to use regular attacks. Select sets moves and displays the map in dungeons. The Y button is only used in dungeons and it is used to change the direction you want to go.

Graphics and Sound
The graphics are the best for a DS game but what can you expect from a pokemon game. The dungeons are well detailed and the graphics are a bit cartoonish like all the pokemon games. They could have done more with the animation of the moves though. For the most part the pokemon are pretty detailed and colorful. The music for each dungeon is different and pretty nice but most of the time I turn the sound down when playing. The sound effects for the attacks are neat, and nice to listen to sometimes.

Overall this is a great to buy for your kids or even you, and it is a really cute and addictive game. I recommend this game for anybody that love cute games and love playing pokemon games.
