Paperboy - the classic comes to GameBoy

by  cybercathy,   May 25, 2001

Pros:  Easy and just like the game that you remember from the 80's

Cons:  Easy and just like the game that you remember 80's - so it gets boring

The Bottom Line:  Good for people like me who are stuck in the 80's, but definitely not a good present for a kid.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I remember playing Paperboy when I was much younger. I loved it, and could spend hours playing it. Maneuvering my way down the street, avoiding obstacles like grates, cars, and fire hydrants, all the while tossing newspapers at some houses and trying to break all the windows in others. The neighborhood stays the same every day, but more and more obstacles get thrown in your way.

The premise is still the same, and the GameBoy version is still fun. This is the first game that I ever got for my GameBoy, so I should caution that I do have some sentimental attachment to it. I should also caution that I will forever be hooked on 80's video games, and I think that you have to be someone like me to enjoy this game. I don't see kids today liking it, and this was confirmed by my cousin's kids who think that it is one of the lamest games ever. Don't buy this game for your kids. Buy it for yourself!

It is not complicated, and there is no real goal to achieve - except trying to make it through the week without getting fired - but it is good, clean fun. There are three levels (easy, medium, hard), and when you get to the end of each day there is a bonus obstacle course where you can really rack up the points. You go through the seven days of the week and try not to get fired. Each day is more difficult than the previous one.

You can customize the levels to adjust how many lives you have, etc. etc. I found the controls pretty easy to use, and the sounds and graphics what I remember them to be from the original.

This is not the kind of game that I play for hours on end, but I have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it. I usually play a couple of games, then shelf it until I feel the need to be a paperboy once again.

Now if they would just make Burgertime and Tapper for GameBoy Color I will be set for life...
