Disappointing

by  szneimer,   May 24, 2008

Pros:  Light, good design.

Cons:  Expensive, freezes, slow.

The Bottom Line:  Do not buy the product. It is a very disappointing product. It can place you in danger if you need to dial 911 and it freezes.

I have been a fan of Palm since they began making smartphones. With every new product, I saw improvements. I had a Handspring, a Palm, and a Treo. I bought the Treo 680 because it was the only one that was unlocked and could work with T-Mobile. Unfortunately, the Treo 680 is a much worse product than the Treo 600. I bought a 680 because I needed to open pdf attachments. While it opens pdf attachments, it is slow. The most problematic issue that I see is that the Treo freezes and sometimes it takes a minute or two until you are able to make a phone call. Similarly, it freezes and it would not allow you to answer a call. Palm says that this is due to an incompatible program, but I don't have anything that didn't come with the Treo. After ten years with a Palm, I will be switching to Blackberry.

In addition, the Palm customer service is not very good. For a product that costs almost $400, the company must be more responsive. The other very big issue I have is that every time I call, I get rerouted to a different country - once to the Philippines, and the next time to India. The people on the other side of the line were trying to help me but they were not very knowledgeable as they were looking up in a database and seemed to be talking from a script. I was to a point where I asked them to give me a phone that rings in the US.
