6640 Oster - Extremely Simple and Great!

by  cworange,   Dec 9, 2006

Pros:  Light, Just as functional as costly blenders. Very powerful. Super easy to clean and use/setup.

Cons:  You have to hold the top of the base as you blend, it's fine though.

The Bottom Line:  Recommended for those that actually use a blender a lot that like easy cleaning and high functionality for low cost.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

I got this blender after my circa 1989 Oster gave up the ghost, and it was a high dollar one back in the day. I got this one not expecting much but I got so much more in terms of the quality of how it blends and how powerful it is for such a cheap/simple blender.

First the 6640 comes with a plastic jar which I thought would be a slight negative but what a positive it turned out to be. Since I work out a lot I usually make smoothies, or drinks when the weekend comes. I really like how light the plastic jar is and how easy it is to move around and clean under the sink without loud clanking noises. Assembly is a short and sweet 2 step process of installing the rubber flange with the blades on the bottom of the jar while upside down, and you just screw the black cup slowly over that (about 2 1/2 turns). I haven't had any of the issues of not being able to easily disassemble the unit at any time like a previous reviewer - it's always been extremely easy to get off and on for cleaning.

Hardware at a Glance:

High Settings:
======================
*Grate
*Blend
*Grind
*Liquefy
*Ice Crush

Low Settings:
======================
*Stir
*Puree
*Chop
*Whip
*Mix

Total Hardware Unit:
======================

*6 Cup (or 135L) container/jar and marked (each cup) easily and plainly on the base -- will go to about 8 cups to the top.

*2 Piece base jar assembly with one rubber flange with blades attached and a black plastic bottom o-ring to secure. Both very easy to clean and take off and re-attach. Top cover assembly is also two piece that fit snugly atop the jar and has a small easily removed plastic food/item feeder cap

*Self Enclosed 450 Watt motor with nice airflow underneath by the way of a 90MM metal fan. (says made by Sunbeam so I guess either the motor is made by Sunbeam or the Blender itself is actually made by Sunbeam).

General Operations:
________________________

I use low settings for protein shakes with just a few ice cubes - a cup soy milk and Met-Rx by using Puree - no need for anything else. Cleans easiest right after drinking by just adding a goop of dish soap and warm water and slosh it around and emptying into the sink. You can clean also use the "stir" on the low setting by adding 4-5 cups of water with soap but I haven't needed to use that function unless blending with food -- a simple sink wash will do after drink blending.

When I make margaritas with more ice cubes added I use high settings and use Ice Crush about 4 times with 5 second pulses - then switch to Blend and it makes perfect frozen margaritas or any other frozen drink. much better than the older blender and totally smooth I think the very sharp and sturdily built blades have to do with this as I was specifically look at that when looking at blenders in the store. This is the same blender as the 6663 with the glass base but the 6663 has a 12 speed motor and i decided that I would try one with a plastic base/jar and 10 speeds vs. 12 speed was not big deal to be in fact 6-8 speeds would have been fine

The Plastic jar seems to be very durable I have dropped it a few times and it bounces a few times with no cracking at all and cleans easily without much of the mix sticking to the walls of the base. I now prefer plastic to glass because it seems much lighter and easier to use, and when no one is around after a very hard workout I drink the protein shake right out of the blender and it's great because my arms are usually very tired and weak afterwards and the plastic is very light. The only **caveat is that you can't just sit the plastic base atop the blender base and leave it there as you blend. Also, the plastic top is very easy to use and will fit snugly atop the base and you can easily twist the top off and out while the blender is atop the base to add food items when you are food blending. You have to gently hold the top of the blender as it blends to keep it from tilting off kilter --- very small price to pay for the quality blending that the 450W high quality motor gives you on this blender. It's cheaper because it has a plastic base and basic but high in functionality with all the buttons you need and is extremely powerful with the 450W self-enclosed motor and it's fairly quiet (for a blender). Basically, if you just want a blender that works great with not too many frills this is the one.
