Consumer Review

Epinions

Not for younger players

by  packdragon,   May 16, 2001

Pros:  Good if you're a good and coordinated puzzle-solver.

Cons:  Bad if you're not.

The Bottom Line:  Fun for some, but not for a wide audience.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

For those who prefer simpler games (run, jump, point, shoot) this game is not for you. Learning the controls to talk to other Mudokons will be frustrating to both children and the impatient alike. It will be near impossible for those who cannot read yet. My little 5-year-old nephew insisted on playing this game because it was new, but kept running to me to tell him what was going on. Sometimes I didn't even know what was going on! Then there's my 72-year-old grandmother who is spanish-speaking and impatient. Not a very good game for her either. It isn't a platformer where there is only one obvious direction to go.

Luckily for non-English speaking people there is the option to select a different language, which I thought was cool. I forgot what they all were, but other languages include German, Spanish, French and maybe Italian. It was a lot more than I had expected from any video game.

If you've played the first one, the second one isn't just more of the same. It has a more "industrial" feel and requires more puzzle-solving than the first. If you're not patient or good and figuring such things out, you'll get frustrated pretty fast.

I think it takes a particular kind of person to enjoy the Oddworld series: Those who are NOT impatient lovers of fast-twitch video games, and who are perceptive problem-solvers good at unraveling mysteries or puzzles. There is a story to follow so that it isn't just boring puzzle-solving, and there is action involved since it's a part of the puzzle-solving. If you can get into it, it won't be boring. But that's if you can get into it.

ONE LAST NOTE
If you are a strict ultra-conservative Christian this game is also not for you. I have a friend who is one and here's how she saw the game: The main character is a demon who can possess other people, and only creatures of Satan go around possessing people. He also has magic, which of course, is also demonic. It's an interesting point of view I never thought of, but something to consider if you or the person you're buying this for is highly religious.
