Author's Review
I was real excited when I found out that Nintendo was making a pokemon game on the Wii. I have been a big Pokemon since I was a little girl so I really wanted the game ever since I heard about it. When I first heard about it I thought is was going to be more like Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness, but the closer it came to the release date I found out that it was going to be more like the Pokemon Stadium games which were on the Nintendo 64. I ended up spending my own money on it this game which made me feel happy because it means its my game. Once I started playing Pokemon Battle Revolution I was so excited and I was having so much fun. It so fun that you can get addicted to the game and not want to stop playing the game. To find out why this game is so awesome read the rest of my review.
Story
Pokemon Battle Revolution is one of the few pokemon games that doesn't have a story at all. The only other pokemon games that didn't have a story were the Pokemon Stadium games, which makes it similar to the Pokemon Stadium games.
Gameplay
When you first start the game it will ask you to create a profile and then you will be taken to the root menu. The root menu has the choices Colosseum Mode, DS Battle Mode, and Options. Colosseum Mode is where you will battle in various Colosseums which are located throughout Poketopia. You use Battle Passes when battling in the Colosseums, which I will explain more about it later. DS Battle Mode is where you had your friends can use your DS's as controllers and battle with your own Pokemon from your Diamond or Pearl. The options menu is where you can change certain options for the game which are controls and changing the announcers voice on or off during a battle.
Battle Passes are very important when it comes to taking part in the Colosseums. A Battle is a card that shows the Trainer the information of the Pokemon on the card. The trainer and Pokemon that are set on the Battle Pass are the ones that enter the battles in the Colosseums. You can't change the trainer on the pass but you can change the clothes of the Trainer and catchphrases they say.
When you choose the Colosseum Mode you will be taken to the Colosseum Mode Menu Screen, which has the options: Storage, Battle Pass, Battle, Nintendo WFC, Shop, Profile, and Save. The Profile option is simple enough since all it lets you do is edit your profile. Of course the Save option allows you to simply save your game progress. The Nintendo WFC option is where you go when you want to connect with a DS so you can transfer the Pokemon from Diamond or Pearl to Battle Revolution. The Storage option is where all the Pokemon you have copied from Diamond and Pearl. The good thing about coping the Pokemon to Battle Revolution is that once the Pokemon is copied to Battle Revolution the Pokemon will remain in the DS. The Battle Pass option is where you can check your Battle Passes and edit them if you choose to. There are three types of Battle Passes you can use, which are Custom Passes, Rental Passes, and Friend Passes. Custom Passes are only for the Pokemon you have copied over from Diamond or Pearl. Rental Passes is a pass with a random pokemon set. Friend Passes are Battle Passes you get from friends or from battling on Nintendo WFC. The Battle option is the option you choose when you want to take part in a Colosseum battle. You can either choose Colosseum Battle where you take part in many different Colosseum Battles, Free Battle where you can go against your own Battle Passes which are used by either a CPU or another player, and the Battle Tutorial where you can find helpful tips about Pokemon battles and check information.
When you first start a battle you have to choose the pokemon you want to take part in the battle. The number of pokemon you can choose to use in a battle depends on the rules of the Colosseum you are taking part in. When a battle begins the first pokemon you chose to use in the battle will be sent out. Once the battle starts you have the option to Fight, Pokemon, or Give in. The fight option is where you can tell the pokemon to use on of its four moves. If one of your pokemon faint or you want to take switch out with another pokemon you choose Pokemon. Give in is simply that you forfeit the battle and you automatically loose. Once you choose the Fight command it will show the pokemon's moves on the screen and once you choose the move you want to use it will attack the opponents pokemon. Just like in most pokemon games your pokemon will have advantages and disadvantages when fighting against enemy pokemon. There are a total of 17 pokemon types in the game which are Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Steel, and Dark. Some types will super effect other types of pokemon which means it will do twice the damage as much as usual. For example, a Fire move will do double damage to grass pokemon and a Grass move will do double damage to water pokemon. Some types will not do any damage to other types of pokemon like a ghost move will not do any damage to a normal pokemon. It happens the other way around where normal moves don't do any damage to ghost pokemon.
Poketopia is actually a Pokemon-battle theme park which has lots of Colosseum's spread out through the park. Each of these Colosseum's have their own conditions for you to clear. When you clear a Colosseum you can receive presents from the lady at the reception desk. The main idea of this game is to fight in all the Colosseum battles and become the Poketopia Champion. When you win a battle without any of your pokemon fainting you will get a Perfect Point. If you loose a battle you can use a Perfect Point if you have any to use so you can try winning the battle again. All Perfect Points are reset once you clear a Colosseum or when you retire from a battle. When you clear Colosseum's you will also win Poke Coupons, which you can use to buy gear for your Battle Pass trainers or buy items that you can transfer over to Diamond or Pearl through Mystery Gift. There are two rules that determine the Pokemon's levels for the battles. These two rules are LV. 30 Open and LV. 50 All, and LV. 30 Open is only an option in Colosseum Mode.
DS Battle Mode is where you can batttle your friends using your pokemon from Diamond and Pearl, and you have to use your DS as the controller when playing in this mode. You can also use Nintendo Wi-Fi so you can battle people far away. There are some necessary items you need to be able to enjoy Nintendo WFC Battles. These items are: Wii console, Wii Remote, Wii Pokemon Battle Revolution Game Disc, and Broadband Internet connection.
Controls
The Control Pad is used to select an option or panel on the screen. The A button is used to confirm your choices and the B button is used to cancel a selection or go back to the previous screen. The Home button displays the home menu to move and select with the Poke Ball pointer you point the Wii Remote at the screen and move the Wii Remote around.
Graphics
The graphics for Pokemon Battle Revolution is better than Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness but not that much better. The graphics are a lot better than the previous Pokemon Stadium games for the Nintendo 64. The pokemon in Pokemon Battle Revolution are a little more colorful and detailed than they were on Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness. The battle scenery in Pokemon Battle Revolution is a little better than in Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness. The cool thing is in Pokemon Battle Revolution they actually show the pokemon physically hitting the opponents pokemon with their attacks. The graphics in Pokemon Battle Revolution are more colorful than the graphics in Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness.
Sound
The sound in Pokemon Battle Revolution is also better than Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness. The music while in a Colosseum battle is actually pretty good. The music choice is a lot better than it was in Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness. The announcer for the Colosseum battles in Pokemon Battle Revolution is actually the announcer of the actual Pokemon show. One thing I wish they would add to the Pokemon games is voice overs for the trainers.
Overall the game is really awesome and fun and addictive. I recommend this game to anyone who is a pokemon fan and anyone who is a big Nintendo fan.
