Author's Review
Ive played this game off of a friends DS, got so addicted, i let him borrow my PS2 while i borrowed his DS. Once you get it home, pop it in, theres a setting called tutorial which plays a video for people who dont know how to play, and dont want to read the book, which was a very nice touch.
What i really liked about this game, was that it was always changing and twisting, it had so many levels (planets) that had played different, for example, some planets have low gravity, others dense. Gravity comes into play because the point of the game is to send as many little blocks off the screen as possible, not to keep your screen clear. You do this by taking the colored blocks, and moving them up and down, untill they make a row or a colum of 3 or more. You controll the meteos by "grabbing" them with the stylis and dragging them. You can only move them up and down, not left and right. once 3 touch, they turn into rockets, and push all of the meteos above it into the air, like a giant platform. as its going higher and higher, eventually, if the gravity and weight are too much, it wone completly clear the screen, so you need to make another combo in the stack to give it a little push.
You and another player keep launghing meteos off the screen, whare they stack up, and fall onto the other player. The game is similar to tetris in the fact that if meteos stack to high, you get whats called a nova, whare your planet explodes. usually you would loose, but it youre playing stock game mode, then you can take several novas before you lose
MULTIPLAYER
Now while this game doesnt have online multiplayer, it does have single pack multiplayer, whuch is one game can allow 3 other people without the game to play by downloadint the multiplayer data from the only guy with the game. this is really neat because me and a friend can play, as long as he has his DS and i have my DS and game, its all done wirelessly.
In single pack play, you pick from 4 planets you have to play on. But if and a friend have the game, you can do whats called multi pack, meaning that you and up to 3 friends can play wirelessly. The upside of this is now its a bit better, you can play on planets you unlocked against planets your opponets have unlocked. The game also records stats for games played on multipack play, but not on single pack play.
Another feature of the game is the Fusing system. as you play, any meteos launched into the space or off screen are counted, and if you win, they go into a bank. at the meteos bank, you can take the hundreds of meteos you have and spend them on advanced items, planets, planet soundtracks (meteos has very good game music) and rare metals. The rare metals are time and soul, they are rare to find in game. some fusions require these rare metals, but usually in low quanties.
overall, meteos alone is enough reason to buy a DS for puzzle lovers. The lack of online play might not mean that you cant play online. several people are trying to get tunneling software to work with the DS, so instead of you and a friend right next to you, data gets sent to his DS thru the internet, but i havent seen any such software for the DS and running it is usually extremly difficult.
UPDATE
VISUALS AND AUDIO
This game really shows what the DS can do as far as the touch screen and audio processors go. In the game, you can unlock soundtracks for your when-ever listening. i thought that was pretty neat because some of the songs from the game are actually worthy of having a soundtrack. The soundtrack menu works like the sound test menu of many games, allowing you to play back every sound used on a planet who you have the soundtrack to.
The graphics are just what a game of this type needs, simple little sprites. It looks really good for a DS game, but its only 2D, hance the use of sprites. the game is really neat as each planet has a different background and the tiles have different patterns, but the same base color, for example, the fire tile is always going to be red, but it might not have the fire symbol on it.
