Author's Review
Does your favorite Epinioner have black hair? Does your favorite Epinioner wear earrings? Well we may not know or care, but in the game Guess Who these type of questions are important. Thats right gang I am going to tell you about a game my son received for Christmas. My son will have a section of this review to tell you about what he thinks of it also.
Hasbro/ Milton Bradley puts this delightful game out. Included in the game are two panels one red and one blue. These panels hold 24 frames. The frames hold cards of pictures of people. They have two sets of frames and pictures the pictures have a red and blue background to match the panels, which hold the frames. You also get a deck of 24 yellow cards, which have the pictures of the people on them. You will have to put the pictures in the frames and attach the frames to the panel. This might be a little difficult for youngsters but it is not all that difficult older children and adults should not have much trouble. Also included in the game is an instruction booklet. Within this instruction booklet is an address where you can send to buy pieces that might get lost. Now unfortunately our game was missing two frames when my little guy opened it up. So I sent a letter off to this address asking them to mail us the two frames. Within five weeks we received the missing pieces, which I felt was a decent time frame.
Now playing the game what you do is draw a yellow card and set it up in a slot provided on the panel. You cant let your opponent see it though so facing your opponent is the best option. Then the youngest player will start by asking questions such as does your person have blonde hair? Depending on the answer yes or no the person will eliminate people on their board by flipping the picture of people who dont fit into the answer down. Then the other player asks their question such as does your person have rosy cheeks? Of course depending on the answer they will eliminate people on their board. The game goes like this until one player has eliminated all but one person. Then the obvious question would be is your person George (or whoever the name of the person might be.) George happens to be one of my favorites I think he looks cool with his green golfers hat. We have identified people by things we think they look like and have come up with yes or no questions like does your person look like a golfer. The questions have to be yes or no.
You can have a tournament, which is whoever, wins five games that you mark by moving a sliding white arrow on the panel identifying a win 1,2,3,4,5. Sometimes well play the tournament today we actually had to play nine games, which I think is the longest we have gone my son came from behind to beat me of course that brought many smiles from him at least. (I was happy too. We like losing sometimes to show my son how to act if you lose we are big on being a good loser and/or winner depending on the circumstances.) You can also just play games without marking the winner and loser.
Another variation that adds difficulty to the game is to use two persons rather than just one. My son enjoys this method also it is definitely harder because you have to be careful how you word the questions and those you eliminate. If you ask does one of your people wear glasses and the answer is yes you cant eliminate those who dont wear glasses because you only know one of the people wears glasses.
I really like this game because it helps develop a childs deductive reasoning an important skill to have in life. Also figuring out some questions eliminate more people than other questions is an example of how this game helps develop deductive reasoning. For instance only four people have blue eyes so if this is one of the first questions you ask and the answer is yes it helps a lot. The searching for clues and looking at the people to ask questions about helps develop skills important in reading. If you play the option where you use two people this also helps test and increase ones memory. Of course my son remembers things better than I do so maybe it will be educational for me too. Besides the educational benefits the game is just down right fun.
We discovered this game over the summer at a local parks recreation program. My son played there all summer long and enjoyed himself immensely. So come Christmas time Mom and Dad gave Grandma and Grandpa a hint about this game. Low and behold my son got this from his Grandparents for Christmas so I am not sure about the price but I wouldnt imagine it is too much and I believe for the fun it is worth it. The suggested ages on the box are 6 and up. I have to agree a child who is close to 6 might be able to play with help but I think for a child under 6 it might be a little difficult to come up with questions and eliminate the right people.
Now for Ryans take on the game. It is a lot of fun finding the people. I like asking questions. It is a lot of fun Dad when I beat your butt.
We thank you for reading and hope you have found this helpful in someway.
