I love my little Danby DDW396W!!!

by  griffave,   Sep 15, 2004

Pros:  Works great, looks good, quiet, GETS THE JOB DONE SO I DON'T HAVE TO!

Cons:  Don't misuse it with laundry soap -- use dish powder and avoid leaks!

The Bottom Line:  Buy this if you hate to do dishes like I do. A friend saw me taking this home, and bought one himself!

Only AFTER a house full of relatives left town, post-summer-visit, did it occur to me to get a dishwasher for my pre WW2 house. There just isn't enough space for a conventional portable (that you wheel around the floor), so I started looking for the counter-top variety.

Based on the reviews here, I purchased the Danby DDW396W from walmart.com. I haven't regretted it a second! I love everything about the little cutie. Okay, it takes up some counter space, but so did all those dirty dishes! I connected it without any problems, although I did need a little teflon tape to handle a leak at the point my old faucet meets Danby's screw-in attachment piece.

I rinse my dirty dishes right away -- otherwise my two cats would love to have an excuse to explore the countertop -- so I've only needed to run the Short cycle with very little powder. The dishes come out sparkling and HOT!! I have to leave the door ajar for 15-20 minutes so they cool enough to put away.

I have to tell you about ONE instance of leaking -- you CANNOT use other kinds of soap in this thing. Even a tiny bit of laundry powder (I ran out of Cascade) creates a lot of foam and air pressure, that forced water out of the door seal. I was devastated, thinking I had ruined my Danby. However, when I went back to dish powder the leak stopped! Great news.

The other "uptight" thing I do to save water is: if I've got gunky pots and pans left over from dinner, I stack them under the faucet before starting the Danby. The hot soapy water that drains out really soaks the crud off!

I really can't think of anything I dislike about this unit. I dread it wearing out, though I will certainly replace it with another Danby, until time comes to remodel the kitchen and have a full-size dishwasher installed. I will also take the advice of the gentleman who ordered the replacement door seal and sprayer arm -- those are repairs I could handle myself whenever the time comes.
