Apple Nano; You're the One That I Want oo,oo, ooooo!!

by  popsrocks, top reviewer in Home and Garden, Hotels & Travel, Restaurants & Gourmet, Books ,   Jan 5, 2008

Pros:  Great little size, perfect for the music-lover that doesn't have to maintain a huge library.

Cons:  Not enough storage for multi-videos. Buy a larger capacity iPod if that's your intent.

The Bottom Line:  After owning a 60GB iPod I'm spoiled by the movies it holds but, if I were looking for a music only iPod for traveling, it's THE one that I want.

I have a 60 GB iPod that I love and always have with me. My youngest daughter purchased a 30 GB iPod about half a year ago. I am very impressed with it and if I were going to purchase an iPod, that would be the one I would choose, even over the 60Gb that I have had for a couple of years.

Another daughter of mine was given the Apple iPod nano Third Generation for Christmas from her younger sister. Lucky her!!

I was very interested in it because of its extremely compact size. It's just 2 3/4" x 2" x about 3/16" thick. I love how compact it is. My 60 GB seems like it's huge next to this one. I like the way the nano fits in a breast pocket with hardly any weight or lump.

The problem with my going for the nano is that with just 4GB I can't store the amount of movies on it as I do my 60GB. That has become important to me because regardless of small size these iPods give a clear picture and unusually great sound. It's almost like being in a surround sound Dolby theatre. This 4GB is capable of showing videos. That, I find amazing for such a tiny size. The window on this unit is also a bit smaller than the one on mine at just 1 7/8" x 1 1/4". The picture though is till extremely clear as is the sound awesome.

So I would not purchase this if I had videos in mind because of the space they take. Now if I was looking for something to keep a small library of my favorite songs for traveling, THIS IS THE ONE TO GET!! I love the small size and feel and it can hold near 1,000 songs. My daughter now has 830 songs and she can see the end is getting nearer but, she is quite satisfied with all the songs she has.

Now I have had my 60GB going on three years and I don't have much more music on it than I could fit on this 4GB digital media player, so for me this would be perfect if I only was interested in music. For those who like music videos this will hold quite a few of them and a modest library of songs. Podcasts are cool on this lil' unit too.

The set up of this iPod was easy as pie. No probs. Having said that I'll add that if I were using the iPod Nano Quick Start directions that came with it, I would have been lost. It seems to me that the Apple people expect a new owner to know more about the unit than some first time user can handle. There isn't much meat to those directions and the pictures didn't tell me a whole lot. That said, I was able to use the info I learned using my 60GB as a good starting point for this lil' baby.

I have gotten to be able to use the wheel fairly well. I particularly like the concave feel on the center button. It gives me a center point to work from and it functions well. The wheel is still a bit too sensitive to my liking but as stated. I'm getting there.

That one wheel takes care of ON and OFF, adjusting the back-light, bringing up the main menu and others, fast forwarding and rewinding songs, and all sorts of other functions.

This tiny iPod has some excellent graphics that even my 60GB lacks. It has half screen image that go along with songs, videos, games and other functions. Cool!!

Oh yes, there's this very cool game that reminds pops of the old original "pong" game but brought up into the future. Very cool. It also has some kind of card solitair game and like every iPod I have ever played with a kind of "trivia game" using the music that is in the iPod.

I'll tell you one little basic change that is different from my iPod and I really like is the port for the headphones being on the bottom of the unit rather than the top. I never liked the placement on mine.

This is also where the dock connector is. The iPod came with a USP port wire that also enables the iPod to be charged up while connected to the PC. I found that the life of the small battery is good. After a couple hours use there doesn't seem to be much loss at all. It seems more than five hours of continuous audio play can be obtained without losing power. The video use takes much more life out of the battery.

The iPod comes in a sweet little case that holds the UBC cable, some port pieces and the iPod itself. It also contains a wrap-a-round holder for the ear buds that gives good sound though I have gone to Bose on mine. It's more for carrying or storing for safety rather than something to keep the iPod in at all times.

This is a very compact iPod that is comfy to carry and cool in looks. It holds a limited library of songs, about 1,000. That's enough for me if I was only audio minded. I've moved up to storing videos and this just doesn't have enough space for much on it unless one would change their movies and song selections from time to time.

Mmm, perhaps my wife would like one of these. She doesn't like watching video as I do on an iPod but does like to listen to a limited amount of songs. This would fit perfectly in her pocketbook with the...
...never mind, too much inside. Still, I know she would like it.
