Author's Review
Well, there is no way to rate the original Aliens vs Predator, so everything about the game in general I'll say here too. I love this game. If you liked the movies, aliens or predator, then you're in for a treat. The 3d accelerated environments look just like a scene out of the movie. Darkness and shadows follow you everywhere. Best of all: when you shoot out the lights, they really go out. It actually gets dark in the room. "You idiot! then you can't see" is what you're thinking, right? Well each race has special vision modes.
Predator has one for hunting marines and aliens and a third just for the dark. Predators can also turn invisible and do all sorts of cool things from the movies. They're armed with spear guns, shoulder canons, discs, and their trusty claws. Just to keep things fair the predators abilities are monitered by an energy level. If you run out of energy you're stuck using your claws, or the speargun-which runs out permanently.
Aliens can naturally sense the marines and see them with purple auras around them. For the dark, aliens have a special vision mode too. The cool thing about the aliens is that they can climb walls. I'll admit, it's confusing as hell, but fun when you dive out of the shadows to pounce on a marine. The alien is armed with claws, it's tail, and a head-bite to replenish energy.
The marine has so many weapons i can't even begin to name them all, but he still is the hardest race to play as in single player and the weakest in multiplayer. He is also equipped with a special 'green' vision mode to see in the dark and a motion detector. The motion detector toggles on and off with your goggles, and only seems to make things creepier. It's beeping, so you know something is coming, but you can't see it.
This game is scary just like resident evil. Imagine you're walking down a seemingly quiet and peaceful hallway when an alien dives through a vent and lunges for your throat. The game also provides special cheat modes that you have to earn by completing difficult challenges. For instance: you might have to take 15 trophies of marine heads with the predator to gain a super speargun that never runs out.
Multi-player is fun,but a bit slow. I've only played it a few times though. Overall the replay value is good and the challenging levels will keep you trying for quite a while. Another interesting feature about the original was that you could listen to music from a cd while playing the game. Unfortunately I'm not sure if this feature carries over into gold edition. Since this game is cheap, it's really worth the cash.
